Police Executive Training in Sobriety Checkpoints
Safer provides
law enforcement personnel with accurate, up-to-date information
on the legal and safety issues involved in conducting sobriety
checkpoints through the Sobriety Checkpoint Training course.
The course enables law enforcement personnel to make legitimate
arrests and to conduct safe, highly visible checkpoints. The
training course is required for all agency supervisors, and is
accredited by the New Mexico Department of Public Safety Training
Center for eight (8) hours of continuing education units (CEUs).

National Selective Traffic Enforcement Program
(NSTEP)
The information
in this course will assist law enforcement in developing, implementing,
and managing traffic safety programs. The information and materials
in this course can be used as a guide to set up STEPs from the
initial development stages through their implementation and evaluation.
It is designed to inspire innovative solutions to community traffic
safety problems. This course is designed for law enforcement
personnel, to include but not limited to, field officers, first
line supervisors, managers, administrators, grant managers, and
law enforcement program coordinators. This course is designed
to include sixteen (16) hours of instruction over two days, with
the second day emphasizing STEP proposals and the supervision
of STEP's. Persons who choose to complete only the first day
of instruction are eligible for eight (8) hours of credit when
they successfully complete the examination at the end of the
first day.

Law
Enforcement Coordinators' Symposium (LECS) Training
Each year, as
a component of the LECS, Safer Law Enforcement Liaisons offer
a training session. Attendees who wish to participate may earn
continuing education units. Some of the trainings are also offered
in abbreviated or introductory versions for the purpose of this
symposium.

Standard
Field Sobriety Testing Training
The course teaches
skills that enable law enforcement officers to detect impaired
drivers, administer the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs),
and describe events (writing reports and giving persuasive testimony).
Key elements of the course are laws governing DWI enforcement;
concepts and principles of the divided attention and horizontal
gaze nystagmus test; guidelines for processing suspects arrested
for DWI and for preparing DWI arrest reports; and guidelines
for preparing and delivering testimony. For more information

NHTSA Standardized Child Passenger Safety Technician
Training
The 32-hour NHTSA
Standardized Child Passenger Safety Technician course is intended
for individuals who wish to become certified child passenger
safety technicians capable of performing child safety seat inspections
and installations. This interactive, hands-on program is the
most comprehensive training available. Participants are taught
through a combination of lectures, discussions of the most current
technologies, role-playing, and hands-on practice with both child
safety seats and vehicle belt systems. Some topics covered include:
correct selection, usage and installation of child safety seats;
correct identification and usage of belt systems; air bag safety;
and "best practices" involved in child passenger safety.
The curriculum is accredited through the New Mexico Department
of Public Safety Training Center for thirty-two (32) hours of
continuing education units and the Emergency Nurses' Association.

Operation Kids Training
Since 1997, Safer
has implemented the International Association of Chiefs of Police
Operation Kids training course. The Operation Kids training is
a six-hour course intended for law enforcement personnel interested
in child passenger safety. This training reviews child passenger
safety issues and the proper use of child restraints. It also
helps officers recognize misuse and inappropriate child safety
seat selection. This information assists officers during traffic
stops and community events. This workshop is accredited through
the New Mexico Department of Public Safety Training Center for
six (6) hours of continuing education units (CEUs).
