Law Enforcement Trainings

Safer has extensive experience in coordinating various training programs for law enforcement-the Occupant Protection Usage and Enforcement (OPUE) training since 1986 and the Traffic Occupant Protection Strategies (TOPS) training. Safer has facilitated the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Operation Kids training course since 1997. New Mexico Department of Public Safety Training Center has also certified the Safer Sobriety Checkpoint, OPUE, TOPS, and Operation Kids courses for advanced credit. In 1996, Safer received a grant from the National Airbag Campaign to develop a model for improving child restraint use through directed enforcement. In combination, these programs have reinforced a strong collaboration between Safer and law enforcement agencies statewide. Currently Safer offers the following training programs for advanced credit through the New Mexico Department of Public Safety Training Center.

Police Executive Training in Sobriety Checkpoints

Safer provides law enforcement personnel with accurate, up-to-date information on the legal and safety issues involved in conducting sobriety checkpoints through the Sobriety Checkpoint Training course. The course enables law enforcement personnel to make legitimate arrests and to conduct safe, highly visible checkpoints. The training course is required for all agency supervisors, and is accredited by the New Mexico Department of Public Safety Training Center for eight (8) hours of continuing education units (CEUs). For details regarding this course, you may contact your law enforcement liaison or Safer.

National Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (NSTEP)

The information in this course will assist law enforcement in developing, implementing, and managing traffic safety programs. The information and materials in this course can be used as a guide to set up STEPs from the initial development stages through their implementation and evaluation. It is designed to inspire innovative solutions to community traffic safety problems. This course is designed for law enforcement personnel, to include but not limited to, field officers, first line supervisors, managers, administrators, grant managers, and law enforcement program coordinators. This course is designed to include sixteen (16) hours of instruction over two days, with the second day emphasizing STEP proposals and the supervision of STEP's. Persons who choose to complete only the first day of instruction are eligible for eight (8) hours of credit when they successfully complete the examination at the end of the first day.

Law Enforcement Coordinators' Symposium (LECS) Training

Each year, as a component of the LECS, Safer Law Enforcement Liaisons offer a training session. Attendees who wish to participate may earn continuing education units. Some of the trainings are also offered in abbreviated or introductory versions for the purpose of this symposium.

Standard Field Sobriety Testing Training

The course teaches skills that enable law enforcement officers to detect impaired drivers, administer the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs), and describe events (writing reports and giving persuasive testimony). Key elements of the course are laws governing DWI enforcement; concepts and principles of the divided attention and horizontal gaze nystagmus test; guidelines for processing suspects arrested for DWI and for preparing DWI arrest reports; and guidelines for preparing and delivering testimony. NHTSA Standardized Child Passenger Safety Technician Training

The 32-hour NHTSA Standardized Child Passenger Safety Technician course is intended for individuals who wish to become certified child passenger safety technicians capable of performing child safety seat inspections and installations. This interactive, hands-on program is the most comprehensive training available. Participants are taught through a combination of lectures, discussions of the most current technologies, role-playing, and hands-on practice with both child safety seats and vehicle belt systems. Some topics covered include: correct selection, usage and installation of child safety seats; correct identification and usage of belt systems; air bag safety; and "best practices" involved in child passenger safety. The curriculum is accredited through the New Mexico Department of Public Safety Training Center for thirty-two (32) hours of continuing education units and the Emergency Nurses' Association.

Operation Kids Training

Since 1997, Safer has implemented the International Association of Chiefs of Police Operation Kids training course. The Operation Kids training is a six-hour course intended for law enforcement personnel interested in child passenger safety. This training reviews child passenger safety issues and the proper use of child restraints. It also helps officers recognize misuse and inappropriate child safety seat selection. This information assists officers during traffic stops and community events. This workshop is accredited through the New Mexico Department of Public Safety Training Center for six (6) hours of continuing education units (CEUs).
