Parents and caregivers throughout New Mexico now have a free and convenient way to have their child's safety seat inspected, thanks to a public service provided by the New Mexico Department of Transportation and
Safer. Through fitting stations, parents and caregivers have access to personal instruction from certified technicians on the proper selection and use of their car seats and booster seats. Fitting stations offer appointments during regular hours of operation at a permanent location with a consistent point of contact.
This service is good news for New Mexico's families in light of a study that found the majority of parents continue to make mistakes when using child safety seats. On average, parents and caregivers make at least two mistakes, such as not securing the seat belt tightly around the car seat or not using the correct seat for their child's age or size. These mistakes leave children less protected by their child safety seat and dangerously vulnerable in the event of a crash.
If you would like to make an appointment at the fitting station in your community, please call
Safer at 1-800-231-6145 or one of the numbers listed below.
